Platon, geboren 427 v. Chr. in Athen; gestorben 347 v. Chr. in Athen. Platon stammte aus einer vornehmen Familie. Er soll schon in seiner Jugend Tragödien geschrieben haben. 407 v. Chr. traf er mit Sokrates zusammen, dessen Schüler er bis zu Sokrates Tod blieb. Platon machte Reisen nach Megara, (vielleicht) Kyrene und Ägypten. Er war auch in Unteritalien und Sizilien und traf dort Dionysios I. Um 367 v. Chr. unternahm er eine zweite Reise nach Sizilien zu Dionysos II.
